I skip all the suspense parts now when reading it. But what really shines and raises this book above so many others and is in my top ten and one of my most reread books is the tale of the hero and heroine. If anyone wants a lesson in sexual chemistry this is the book to read. It leaps off the page. Johnny has this amazing bad boy, brooding, sexy as hell aura about him and the reader feels his angst and his longing for Rachel for years and how he now aches to become a better person for her once he sees he might have a chance.

But there are strong issues fighting against them. Most of the people in the small town believe he did the murder he was jailed for and are gunning for him. And then there is the huge chip on his shoulder, understandably so, that needs to come down. Jan 03, Glamdring rated it really liked it Shelves: states-challenge , stand-alone , romantic-suspense , I bought this book years ago but for some reasons I never got around to read it.

I'm glad I finally did. When high school teacher meets bad boy I want to know. If being poor, or black, or drinking, or being abandoned by a parent, or spouse beating, or being divorced doesn't do it, I want to know what does. Her voice was even as she spoke: "Listen to me, Mother. I am tired of you, and everybody else in this town for that matter, calling Johnny Harris trash. Unless you can explain to me why he is, please don't do it again!

Rachel is the daughter of one of the most important and well respected family in town and is 5 years older than Johnny-no-good whose family is considered as white trash. Eleven years ago, she was Johnny's high school teacher when his rich girlfriend was savagely murdered and he was judged guilty.

I think that that book could have done an awesome movie. It was sometimes kind of slow paced but the characters rang true and even though the romance is at the forefront of the story, the mystery of the killer's identity is kept until the end. Last but not least, I really loved both Rachel and Johnny.

His words had banished the sudden chill. View all 6 comments. I loved this book, despite its perfectly corny ending.

I kind of like corny endings, though, so I was pleased. First of all, the beginning was great. It really hooked me in and made me want to keep reading, plus it was laced with my kind of humor. We really dive straight into the story without getting huge info-drops or long-winded background stories.

She is one of my favorite heroines. The way she stood up for Johnny made me want to give her a hug. She was strong, but also kin I loved this book, despite its perfectly corny ending. She was strong, but also kind and loving and affectionate.

And don't get me started on Johnny. Could he be any sexier? And on top of that, he's a really great guy who truly loves Rachel with all his heart. He's also really good with kids, which is something I always like in a guy.

Plus, while he was all macho and everything, he was still vulnerable and actually showed his emotions, which is something I don't see much in romance novels.

I remember one scene where Rachel said Johnny wouldn't like her anymore if she were fat, and he said he still would and that, in fact, she'd be cute fat, like a little "dumpling," I think he said.

I don't know about everyone else, but I thought that was soo sweet! As for the murderer The only other character I really liked was Glenda, one of Johnny's old friends. She was really kind and caring and a great mother.

Rachel's mother and sister weren't exactly well developed, but they were still interesting all the same. I also really liked how Rachel defended herself against the killer, managing to escape on her own she's no damsel in distress, thank God, I'm getting tired of that theme.

Sep 02, Yona rated it really liked it Shelves: contemporary-romance. I was a little skeptical of this book because of the age gap between the characters, I prefer when the male is older than the female not the other way around, but in this case it didn't bother me at all.

I liked the story although there was a lot of little talk and information I really didn't care about. A decent story that was bogged down by the suspense side plot, this book was about pages too long. Although this book had a lovely romance that featured good-girl-falls-for-bad-boy and older-woman-younger-man, I just couldn't pull myself past a general indifference to anything else happening in the book that DIDN'T feature the smokin' hot hero, Johnny Harris.

Rachel Grant, the heroine, reminded me of the heroine from Lightning That Lingers in that her sheltered good girl and somewhat insipid ways initially annoyed me, but she eventually won me over when she showed that she could let loose when her emotions and attraction for Johnny took center stage.

Indeed, the way this romance unfolded reminded me very much of "Lightning That Lingers" from its insipid heroine to its persistent bad boy hero, and the romance itself and attendant sexytimes, which are well done was well worth reading. I would have rated this higher, though, if the suspense part of the story hadn't been so cumbersome and distracting. I recognize what the author was trying to do here, but I honestly could have done without the POV from the villain and historical ghost story aspect.

It just didn't hold my interest. Also, Johnny Harris himself deserves more stars. He's a tormented falsely-convicted ex-con bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks, and he quotes poetry, has a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas, and has always carried a torch for teacher a. Seriously loved him. He was fascinating to watch and had me begging for more page time.

The style of writing, though, with so much internal POV for the heroine, just didn't gel well for me. I found myself impatient for more dialogue and Johnny scenes. So, basically, great job on the Johnny character and a very nice romance, but they'll need to bust out a big red editing pen before I'd think this book deserves more than 3 stars. She has agreed to give him a job so he can get out on parole, but he is far from the young man she remembered, and not nearly as grateful as she would have thought. He is hardened and bitter, and a fully grown man whom she finds disturbingly attractive. Sparks fly between the two and Rachel tries her best to resist, but view spoiler [after consoling a drunk Johnny who bares his soul to her after his abusive father's death, she gives in and their relationship changes.

Half regretting her lapse, a confused Rachel goes back to her boring, steady boyfriend, who will be able to provide her with the future she believes she wants, while Johnny spends his time with one of his old high school friends and her kids.

When she gets murdered in an eerily similar way to Johnny's high school girlfriend, suspicion falls on him again, but he has a solid alibi that the respectable Rachel provides, having been with him when the murder took place, opening both investigations wide open.

The two get back together and must now remain vigilant, since a pattern has emerged that puts Rachel in the killer's cross hairs, while the police are no closer to solving the murders. Despite their vigilance, Rachel gets lured away by the killer who turns out to be none other than Kay the florist, whom Rachel had considered a friend. She believes that the three of them are the reincarnation of a popular trio of a ghost story of the area, where a vicar's wife killed and buried his mistress somewhere in the local cemetery in order to keep him.

In an unexpected paranormal twist, or having simply lost her marbles, Kay believes that Johnny was her unfaithful husband and Rachel is the mistress whom she has to keep killing again and again in past and future lives in order to be with her beloved. Barely escaping the cemetery that was supposed to be her murder scene again?

In another twist, it turns out that Johnny's second girlfriend did not die after all but was in a coma and guarded by the police in hopes that she'd wake up and tell them who the killer was before they could get to Rachel hide spoiler ].

So all is well that ends well and the unlucky couple finally reach their happy ending after everything they've been through, riding off into the sunset, or simply away from the prejudiced town that caused them so much grief. Very engaging story, with bitter and sweet moments and a couple that you can't help but root for.

My first book by the author but definitely not the last! This is a reread of a reread of a reread and I can keep going as I've lost count of the number of times I've read this book. It's in my top ten all time books. I'm having a hard time picking a rating for it. As an emotional and enjoyable read, there's no question it's even higher than 5 stars as I do believe it's my most reread book. I have absolutely no hesitation on recommending it to all readers who read This is a reread of a reread of a reread and I can keep going as I've lost count of the number of times I've read this book.

I have absolutely no hesitation on recommending it to all readers who read RS and Contemporary books. But over the number of reads, I've come to realize it's not the perfect book. The suspense part of it isn't all the great and I find myself skipping those parts every time.

And the ending suspense section is a bit over the top. But the connection between Johnny and Rachel is so readable and so enjoyable and so everything I love in a romance and that's what keeps me reading. I love that the first few love scenes, while no doubt enjoyable for both of them, are a bit on the awkward side. It's not perfect. I love that Rachel understands the ramifications of getting involved with Johnny and needs time to process it, even though she will embrace it - she just needs a bit of time first.

At this point a bit of an outline would be good wouldn't it. Years ago Johnny Harris was a student of a very young high school teacher Rachel Grant. He came from the wrong side of the tracks from a very dysfunctional family and although very wild, Rachel sees a great deal of potential in him. But then he is arrested and sent to jail for the next ten years for murdering a young woman he was involved with. The story opens when she picks him up at the bus station. He had sent her a letter asking for a job so as to get paroled.

Rachel never believed he could had done what he was sent to prison for so gives him a job in her family's hardware store. Johnny comes home with a giant chip on his shoulder - deservedly so. The townspeople treat him like dirt, convinced he must have killed the girl, after all he went to prison for it. Johnny has had a thing for Rachel ever since he was in her class all those years ago and at the time thought any kind of thing between them was out of the question.

But now he's going to give it a shot. I finished this book again today and no matter how many times I read it, I just love it to pieces. Although I' giving it 4 stars instead of 5, in my heart it gets 6. Jul 03, Saly rated it really liked it Shelves: older-woman.

Johnny was the town's ultimate bad-boy, he came from what people liked to call trash, had a mother who ran off, and a father who liked to drink and beat the crap out of him and his siblings. He did wild things and the girls loved him. When he was eighteen he was convicted for murder, on the basis of his reputation and because the girl was last seen with him.

Everyone considered him guilty except Rachel, who was his English teacher. Rachel was only five years older than him and saw huge potential Johnny was the town's ultimate bad-boy, he came from what people liked to call trash, had a mother who ran off, and a father who liked to drink and beat the crap out of him and his siblings.

Rachel was only five years older than him and saw huge potential in him since he like her loved to read. So, when ten years later Johnny writes to her from prison to give him a job so he can get out on parole, she agrees and gives him a job in her family's hardware store, but the Johnny she sees now is not the one she knew.

This Johnny is rude and looks at her as if she is naked. She also has to withstand her mother and the town's people remarks but she still defends him even if Johnny seems hell-bent on picking fights. The beginning of the book isn't that great.

Rachel had dreams of leaving town, but instead first her sister married the man she thought she loved and by the time she recovered her father fell ill, but Rachel is no door-mat, she stands up to her mother and tells her she is an adult and even tells off Johnny. Rachel is dating a guy she thinks will be a good husband but Johnny tells her to sleep with him and confesses that he has the hots for her.

But Rachel knows there is too much difference between them, first he's an ex-con and she is wealthy and as teacher has a certain reputation to maintain and he's also her ex-student but still she is there for him, then there is also the woman he is seeing or casually sleeping with.

She goes searching for him when his father dies and instead ends up listening to how horrible prison was for him and the ends up having sex with him.

She is horrified later about what happened and when Johnny asks her to go out with him she says she needs time and he gets all angry. He ends up back with that woman and Rachel just kind of misses him. What I didn't like was this and how suddenly Rachel just got over the differences, she is horrified because she has fallen for him and doesn't know what to do, then later on she just tells him she loves him and is ready to leave with him.

But I enjoyed the book, it reminded me of those old Linda Howard, I loved. Rating 3. May 19, Crista rated it it was amazing Shelves: contemporary , tear-jerkers , 5-star , bad-boys.

LOVE a tortured hero Raised by an abusive alcoholic father, Johnny and all his siblings were labeled as "no good" trash and were alienated by most of the affluent townspeople. Rachel was Johnny's teacher, 5 years older, and was one of the only people that ever believed in and cared about Johnny. Johnny was convicted of killing a classmate and sentenced to do time in prison. The story begins as Johnny is released from prison and returns home after being offered a job by Rachel in her father's hardware store.

What sets this story apart from others is the hero Johnny. He is a mess from all that has happened to him in his life. From the abuse that he suffered in the hands of his father to the abuse that he faces in prison, his story will touch even the most hardened of hearts.

Johnny has always wanted Rachel, and the ways in which Johnny sets out to become a better man for Rachel are heartwarming. Johnny and Rachel will stay in your heart for a very long time! Jan 26, Ann-marie rated it liked it Shelves: favorites. Rachel is a teacher who lives in a small town in Kentucky where everybody knows everyone.

She has signed on to give Johnny the man who was accused of rape and murder of his girlfriend ten years ago a job and a place to live. So starts this romance-suspense novel. The whole town wants nothing to do with Johnny and Rachel has to constantly fight his battles that come up with the town folks.

Johnny reveals right in the beginning that he has always have the hots for Rachel who use to be his teacher Rachel is a teacher who lives in a small town in Kentucky where everybody knows everyone. Johnny reveals right in the beginning that he has always have the hots for Rachel who use to be his teacher even when she was teaching him.

So starts this taboo relationship where Rachel wonders does she play it safe and stay with Rob who she is dating or Johnny who has open a passion in her that she never felt. As things seem to be heating up with their romance Johnny and Rachel relationship takes a beating when its found out the woman who he was seeing since he came back Glenda was found murdered and the police are now looking at Johnny again.

I enjoyed the suspense and romance aspect of this book, and when the killer is revealed it is shocking and intriguing. Great read truly enjoyed would have like to know more of what the townsfolk think after the true killer was revealed and more on Johnny's family and Rachel.

Aug 14, Jena rated it really liked it Shelves: thriller , 4-stars , southern , romance. That's what I got from the ending of this book! It was a plot twist I never could have imagined! Overall, I liked the characters, the pacing of the story was good, and the ending was most definitely creative! But the romance between Rachel and Johnny just never connected for me, thus the four-star rating.

It just felt a bit rushed, or contrived, and it felt like there were gigantic timeskips in the development of their relationship.

They're awkward and uncomfortable around each other. OH HEY, two days later, and they're tearing each others' clothes off! But the writing is so lovely, and the plot so intriguing, that the book still gets a hearty four stars. Aug 18, Iraida rated it it was ok Recommends it for: Romance readers that don't need a deep story. Shelves: 2-stars , suspense , reviewed , read-in Nice story and characters, but I found it all happened in a rush.

I enjoyed this book, but certainly I won't read it again. May contain spoilers: As many romance books, I had the feeling that Rachel and Johnny fell in love too fast.

There was not any kind of development here. Suddenly, the always-correct-and-puritan Rachel decides to turn her back to her family and her neighbours and doesn't even care about his current boyfriend.

I found it hard to believe. Anyway, it's an enjoyable reading. The right mix of suspense, romance and red-hot passion! What's not to love ei? Shelves: desert-island-keepers , read , contemporary-romance , romantic-suspense , heac-small-town-setting. The author does a great job of developing the relationship between the hero and heroine as they navigate the treacherous waters of potential scandal that could be brought about by him being an ex-con convicted of murder and her being his former high school teacher, as well as her being five years older than him.

Apparently my sub-conscious did, though, because I managed to figure out who the killer was just before it was revealed, which is a rarity for me. Straight out of high school, Johnny was convicted of the brutal murder of a girl with whom he was romantically involved. There was little physical evidence to connect him to the crime. He basically got railroaded because his semen was found inside her body and he admitted to being the last person to see her alive.
