Career cluster survey pdf

Description of the Survey. This survey was used by a directing teacher as a part of an IEP meeting for a transition aged student in middle school. The directions ask the student to read through the items in each box and place a check next to the items that best describe the student.

The student would then count the number of checks in each box and record the number on the right hand side. After all of the boxes were completed and the checks were counted and recorded in each box, the student was instructed to find the box that had the highest number of checks. The students match their top three highest boxes to the corresponding career cluster and then record the top three at the bottom of the page. Each career cluster contains a description of what a job in the career cluster may entail, but does not offer students specific jobs.

The tool could easily be scored independently by the student completing the survey. Suggestions for Adaptions or Modifications. For some students with disabilities, the vocabulary of the survey could be a little advanced and these students might need the help from a teacher or another adult to complete the survey.

For a student with an intellectual disability, the student may pass by these words leaving them unchecked even if these were words that described them, simply because the student did not understand the meaning of the word. The teacher should ensure that this does not happen by sitting down with the student and explaining in simpler terms any words that the student is unfamiliar with.

To make this survey more meaningful, the teacher could provide the student with specific job examples after the student has listed his top three clusters. The descriptions of the career clusters are vague and lack specific examples of jobs in that type of career cluster. The description does not tell the students which careers to start looking into, or where to go next.

If the teacher could research the students top three career clusters, or even help the student research his or her own top three career clusters, then the student will have an idea of the different kinds of jobs that may fit his interests and strengths.

For instance, after only a few minutes of research, the teacher could find jobs like teacher, historian, career coach, scout, librarian, or private tutor.
